Gnanavelu passes away

T.V. Gnanavelu, a long time Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Aquatics Association and a former Vice-President of the Swimming Federation of India, passed away. He was 74.

The former England coach, Duncan Fletcher, has been appointed coach of the Indian cricket team for a period of two years. He takes over from the highly successful Gary Kirsten.

Popular singer-turned-politician Michel Martelly was declared winner of Haiti's presidential election.

Mr. Martelly took 67.57 per cent of the vote in the March 20 run-off, confirming preliminary results in which he trounced his rival, the former First Lady, Mirlande Manigat.

Iconic spiritual leader Sri Sathya Sai Baba passed away at Puttaparthi in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, leaving behind millions of mourning devotees in India and abroad, and a sprawling system of educational, medical and philanthropic services that has huge resources at its command. He was 85.

Nawang Gombu passes away

Nawang Gombu, the first man to scale Mt. Everest twice, died at his home in Darjeeling after a brief illness. He was 79.

Satish Chandra takes additional charge of NFL Chairman and Managing Director

Satish Chandra has taken additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of National Fertilizers Limited (NFL). 

Besides being on the NFL Board since October 2008, he is holding the charge of CMD of Madras Fertilizers.

Sukhadeo Thorat is new ICSSR chairperson

The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has nominated Sukhadeo Thorat as its chairperson for three years.

The ICSSR is fully funded by the Human Resource Development Ministry.

Bhaskaran, first SFI president, dead

C. Bhaskaran, first all-India president of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and editor of the Chintha Publishers of the CPI(M) in Kerala, died. He was 65.

Muthuraman is new CII President

Tata Steel Vice-Chairman B. Muthuraman has been elected new President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 2011-12. The Godrej Group Chairman, Adi Godrej, is the President-designate. Mr. Muthuraman succeeds Hari Bhartia of Jubilant Organosys.

Legendary archaeologist Lewis Binford passes away

Lewis Binford, founder of the New Archaeology movement and one of the seniormost figures in world archaeology, has passed away at the age of 80.

Vice-Admiral Joshi to head Western Naval Command

Vice-Admiral D.K. Joshi will be the new Chief of the Western Naval Command. He will take charge from Vice-Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin, who attains superannuation on April 30.

Bhawani Singh, last Maharaja of Jaipur, dead

The last titular Maharaja of Jaipur, Sawai Bhawani Singh, died after prolonged illness.He was 80.
