2011 January Bilateral Issues





India and Indonesia signed 29 agreements including Extradition Treaty. These include agreements in the field of oil and natural gas, science and technology, legal assistance, media, Micro, small and medium enterprises and education, mining, infrastructure and manufacturing. The business deals are worth 15.1 billion US Dollars.




India, Sri Lanka sign MoU on ferry 

With the signing of a memorandum of understanding, one more formality has been completed towards resuming the passenger ship liner service from Tuticorin to Colombo, the route of the Kappalottiya Tamizhan (the Tamil helmsman), V.O. Chidambaram Pillai.

VOC, as he was popularly called, launched the service to compete with the British vessels in 1906. Long after his death in 1936, the ships continued to strengthen people-to-people bonds between the two countries.

The MoU envisages putting in place ferry services between Colombo and Tuticorin and Talaimannar and Rameswaram.  








India, Bangladesh finalise deal on Teesta, Feni river waters

As a major development in India-Bangladesh relations, New Delhi and Dhaka have agreed to sign a 15-year interim accord on sharing the waters of common rivers Teesta and Feni.

This was decided at a Secretary-level meeting of the Indo-Bangladesh Joint River Commission (JRC).

The agreement is expected to be signed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Dhaka this year, said Sheikh Wahid-uz-Zaman, Bangladesh Water Resources Secretary, who led the talks with the Indian delegation headed by his counterpart, Dhruv Vijai Singh.


Both Secretaries said the discussions included formulation of a working plan on the sharing of the waters of five other common rivers — Dharla, Dudhkumar, Manu, Khowai, Gumti and Muhuri.








Qatar to supply more LNG to India

Qatar on Friday agreed to increase supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet India's requirements and also facilitate participation of Indian companies in the oil and gas sector. The Gulf nation has also shown interest in cooperation in the area of banking supervision and exchange of information to combat money laundering and terror financing.

“In the hydrocarbon sector, Qatar conveyed readiness to increase supply of LNG to meet India's requirements and to facilitate the participation of Indian companies in the oil and gas sector in Qatar,” said an official statement issued after discussions of the India-Qatar High Level Monitoring Mechanism (HLMM), co-chaired by T.K.A Nair, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Khalid Bin Mohammad Al-Attiyah, Minister of State for International Cooperation of the State of Qatar.







India, Japan close to nuclear accord

The former Japanese Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama said India and Japan were close to finalising a civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

Mr. Hatoyama said after announcing the India-Japan Global Partnership Summit 2011, which will be held from September 5 to 7 in Tokyo this year, aiming to expand people-to-people bilateral relationship.







India-South Korea set $30 billion trade target by 2014

The India-South Korea trade ties to a new level, both countries  agreed to set a $30 billion bilateral trade turnover target to be achieved by 2014.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), both Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and the visiting South Korean Trade Minister, Kim Jong-Hoon, said that huge business opportunities were available for Indian and Korean companies in each other's region.
