The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plans another test-firing of the K-15 missile from a pontoon off the coast of Visakhapatnam.



Dredging Corporation of India Ltd, a Schedule B Company and a mini Ratna Category-I public sector undertaking, has achieved the MoU rating of “Excellent” for 2009-10. The profit after tax of the company is Rs.70 crores for the year as against Rs.46 crores for 2008-09.



Developed under the Sagarika project, the K-15 has been test-fired several times from submerged pontoons off Visakhapatnam.



The India Annual Conference of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) held at Hyderabad on January 28 and 29. Computing professionals, academics and students will discuss current science and technology trends. It is the first time the Hyderabad chapter of ACM is organising the event Experts like Eric A. Brewer, Charles P. Thacker, Alain Chesnais participated.




The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India has come down to 50 (deaths per 1,000 live births) from 53, showing a reduction of three points as compared to 2008, and eight points since 2005, when the national average was 58.

The latest data released by the Registrar-General of India (RGI) in its Sample Registration System for the calendar year of 2009 shows a nine-point decline in rural IMR during 2005-2009 compared to six points in cities and towns.

The IMR is the lowest in Goa at 11, though it was 10 in 2008, followed by Kerala at 12.



Nation celebrates its 62nd Republic Day. This year’s Chief Guest at the parade is president of Indonesia Dr. Haji Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono . The parade will be commanded by Major General Manvender Singh, General Officer Commanding Delhi area.




The National Board of Examination (NBE) has re-introduced the direct six-year, post-MBBS super speciality programme. The courses will be conducted in neuro surgery, plastic surgery, cardio-thoracic surgery and paediatric surgery. A Speciality Advisory Board in the respective specialities is looking into the existing curriculum and assessment scheme for the direct course.




Nedumgandam grama panchayat in Idukki and Kottukal in Thiruvananthapuram have won the Central government award for remarkable implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (MGNREGP).



Singapore's historic Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, now housed in its restored building, was declared open by the City-State's President, S. R. Nathan. Hailing Gandhiji's “timeless” message, Mr. Nathan traced its “special significance” to this day.

The Memorial was first proposed at a meeting of the Women's Section of the Regional Indian Congress in Singapore just one day after Gandhiji was assassinated. Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation-stone on June 18, 1950, at the Memorial's present site in Singapore's Little India. The building was opened on April 25, 1953, by the then Commissioner General for United Kingdom in Southeast Asia, Malcolm MacDonald, who commended the “free, friendly, civilised way of international life in which Gandhi believed.”




New Google India head Rajan Anandan. Google said that Rajan Anandan, the former Managing Director of Microsoft, has joined the company as Vice-President (Sales and Operations) and Head of India region.





CIRUS, a 50-year-old research reactor and India's symbol of the civil and military nuclear programme, was shut down permanently  as per India's commitment under its civil nuclear deal with the United States 





The Bill, "Plachimada Bill" for constituting a tribunal for securing compensation for victims of environmental degradation at Plachimada is getting ready.





Uttar Pradesh has topped the list of States with the maximum number of ragging cases in 2010. Out of the total of 658 cases reported nationwide, 131 were from the State. 





The Muziris Heritage Project, a unique tourism and heritage conservation project linking monuments in the area surrounding the bygone 2,000-year-old Muziris port, will be opened to the public next month. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, the prime mover of the project, told that the site would be opened on February 18 by Union Tourism Minister Selja.

Qatar agreed to increase supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet India's requirements and also facilitate participation of Indian companies in the oil and gas sector. The Gulf nation has also shown interest in cooperation in the area of banking supervision and exchange of information to combat money laundering and terror financing. 






India and World Bank signed an agreement through which the latter will provide a credit of $255 million for the first phase of the national programme to mitigate the impact of cyclones. The programme, which would ultimately cover all the vulnerable areas along the eastern and western coasts of the country, is slated to begin with Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. 





The Union government is working out a formula for ensuring national minority status for the Jain community, Union Law Minister M.Veerappa Moily. Speaking at the inaugural function of Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) Global Summit-2011, he said, “We are definitely working out a formula to execute it as early as possible.”

Nuclear reactor connected to power grid. The fourth unit of the 220 MW Kaiga Generating Station (KGS-4), located in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, was connected to the southern power grid, after the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) granted clearance to it. KGS-4, which achieved first criticality on November 27 last, was “synchronised with the southern grid at 01:56 hours,” General Manager (Corporate Communication) R.R. Kakde of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) said. With this, the country's nuclear power capacity has gone up to 4,780 MW, with 20 reactors in operation. 





The Wage Boards for Working Journalists and Non-journalists and other newspaper employees submitted its recommendation to Labour Secretary of Government of India. Justice GR Majithia, Chairman of the Wage Board recommended 2.5 times pay hike to employees. 





January 25, National Voters Day. The Union Cabinet decided to observe January 25 as ‘National Voters Day' from this year as part of an exercise to get youth to participate in the election process in greater numbers. 





Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced pan-India rollout of mobile number portability (MNP), which will allow mobile subscribers to change their service providers, within a telecom circle, while retaining their numbers





Salem Corporation has joined the elite club of a few local bodies with its environmental-friendly modern gasifier crematorium, along with its abattoir, receiving ISO 14001:2004 certificates of compliance. The Mumbai-based International Certification Services Private Limited assessed both the infrastructure and certified them for environmental management system with silver ranking with the validity period of January 12, 2011 to January 11, 2014. A.K. Singh, of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the historic Allahabad University. His name was approved by the President Pratibha Patil in her capacity as Visitor of all Central Universities. A formal notification has been issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. 





Quit India Movement Fighter Susheel Dara died at Mahishadal in West Bengal. He was 99 years old. He was born in 1911 March 2.





A fire broke out on 'INS Vindhyagiri' after it collided with a foreign merchant vessel at the harbour. It was carrying family members of the naval personnel, who were celebrating 'Day at Sea'.





Union minister of science and technology and human resource development, Kapil Sibal, was inaugurated a "Geospatial World Fourm-2011" at Hyderabad International Convention Centre.






The Brand Trust Report, India Study 2011 survey conducted by Trust Research Advisory (TRA) in Mumbai lists Nokia as the most trusted brand in India. Tata, Sony, L & G and Samsung occupied the rest of top five positions.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's 115th birth anniversary held at the Parliament House in New Delhi.





Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expanded his Council of Ministers by introducing three new faces and upgrading five Ministers. Beni Prasad Verma, Ashwani Kumar and K C Venugopal were entered newly into the Cabinet.
