New National selection policy announced. As per the new policy — which talks about Moving Average System and the Point Based Ranking System — a shooter will require scores from four competitions to be eligible for selection to the National squad.





Japan wins Asian Cup. Tadanari Lee scored an extra-time winner as Japan edged Australia 1-0 to win a pulsating Asian Cup final and become the most successful team in the history of the competition.





Belgium's Kim Clijsters rallied to beat Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the Australian Open final, dashing Chinese hopes of a historic first Grand Slam singles title.

After a shaky first set, Clijsters, a three-time US Open champion, fought her way back to overhaul Li in a thrilling final in front of 15,000 fans at Rod Laver Arena. 

She became the first Asian player to win a Grand Slam.





N. Ramachandran, President, World Squash Federation, was conferred the “Friendship of Sri Lankan Squash award” at a spectacular opening ceremony of the 15th Asian junior championship in Colombo.




Sri Lankan icon and world record holding spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan, who conferred the “Friendship of Sri Lankan Squash Award,” on Mr. Ramachandran.

South Africa clinches series 3-2 against India





World Champion Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand scored an impressive victory over Jan Smeets of Holland to jump to sole lead after the end of the fifth round of the ‘A’ group in the 73rd Tata Steel Chess tournament.



 
Federer wins Qatar Open

World No. 2 Roger Federer began his season in formidable fashion by defeating holder Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4 to win the Qatar Open on Saturday ie: January 8th 2011.


The 16-times grand slam champion proved too much for his Russian opponent, claiming a break of serve in each set to complete victory under the floodlights at the Khalifa Tennis Complex in central Doha.





At Brisbane, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic beat Germany's Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 6-3 to win the women's Brisbane International tennis title .

The 20-year-old Kvitova claimed the second tournament of her career with the 71-minute win, adding to the title she won in Hobart in 2009.






Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki will carry the top seedings into next week's Australian Open tennis, reflecting their No. 1 rankings in men's and women's tennis.

With seedings no longer done on organisers' discretion but purely on rankings, the nine-time Grand Slam winner, Nadal, was named as leading the men's seedings from Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Sweden's Robin Soderling.

Wozniacki heads the women's seedings from Vera Zvonareva, Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams.

Viswanath, Tharshika clinch titles


R. Viswanath and P.T. Tharshika emerged the under-9 boys' and girls' champions in the 19th children's chess tournament, jointly organised by the Elite Club of Chess and SAVSOLrecently.

Cash awards sanctioned to 286 sportspersons

The Union Sports Ministry has sanctioned cash awards worth Rs. 22.57 crore to 286 sportspersons who won medals in the Delhi Commonwealth Games and the Guangzhou Asian Games.

The cash awards have been given under the scheme for special awards to medal winners in international sporting events.

The gold medallists have been sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh each, while the silver and bronze winners have been allotted Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 6 lakh respectively. Medal winners in team events have been given not less than 50 per cent of the individual award money.

India's chess wonderkid - Aditya

Six-year-old M. Aditya (1492) has become the youngest rated Indian chess player, according to the January 2011 list released by FIDE, the international chess body.

Initiated into the sport at the age of two, Aditya has shown considerable progress in quick time. Aditya, who is the reigning Chennai District under-7 champion, trains at T. Nagar Chess Academy.





Leander paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the Chennai Open Doubles Title. They won over Robin Haase and David Martine in the Chennai Open final. They won their first title together in over six years,

Honour for Former India leg-spinner M.V. Narasimha Rao

M.V. Narasimha Rao achieved a rare honour when he was awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE) for his contribution to cricket and humanity in Ireland. The Award will be presented later this year.





Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka won the Chennai Open Title with 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 over Belgian Xavier Malisse.





Record win for Federer

Defending champion Roger Federer enjoyed a record 57th win at the Australian Open as former winner Justine Henin was condemned to her worst Grand Slam in five years.

Men's third seed Novak Djokovic, women's number one Caroline Wozniacki and Russian Maria Sharapova also reached the last 16 as temperatures soared at Melbourne Park.






Samaresh Jung clinched the standard pistolgold in the 54th National shooting championship at the Dr.Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad.





Rajasthan Cricket Team won the "Ranji Trophy" against Baroda in Vadodara It won the Ranji Trophy for the first time in 77 years after getting the better of Baroda on first innings lead.





Pakistan has won the series against New Zealand by drawing the second test at Basin Reserve. This is the first time that Pakistan has won the test series during the last four years. Pakistan has won their last test match against West Indies by 2-0 in 2006-07.





India beat West Indies by 57 runs in the fifth women's One Day International (ODI) in Rajkot. India won the series against West Indies by 3-2 win.
