Vietnam has new party leader

The governing Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV)  elected Nguyen Phu Trong as the new General Secretary in succession to Nong Duc Manh. Mr. Trong, Chairman of Vietnam's National Assembly until now, was chosen the party's highest functionary for a five-year term.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is expected to retain his position at the helm of government following his inclusion as a prominent member of the party's new 14-strong Politburo.


Nuclear reactor connected to power grid

The fourth unit of the 220 MW Kaiga Generating Station (KGS-4), located in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka, was connected to the southern power grid, after the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) granted clearance to it.

KGS-4, which achieved first criticality on November 27 last, was “synchronised with the southern grid at 01:56 hours,” General Manager (Corporate Communication) R.R. Kakde of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) said.

With this, the country's nuclear power capacity has gone up to 4,780 MW, with 20 reactors in operation.

21st anniversary of ‘Holocaust Day'

Groups of Kashmiri Pandits  came together to stage demonstrations to highlight the plight of the community on the 21st anniversary of the ‘Holocaust Day', when thousands of them were forced to flee the Valley following the outbreak of militancy.

Over 300 activists of the Joint Forum of Kashmiri Pandit organisations - Panun Kashmir Movement, All State Kashmiri Pandit Conference , and Non-Camp Migrant Coordination Committee staged protest demonstrations before the Raj Bhawan.

The demonstrators carried placards and raised slogans reminding of the mass exodus of Pandits from the Valley more than 20 years back. It was on the same day in 1990 that the Hindus were given an ultimatum to leave Kashmir or get killed, PKM chief Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo told reporters.


SAIL signs MoU with Hindustan Prefab

Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Prefab Ltd. (HPL) for jointly exploring the techno-economic viability of carrying out the business of prefabricated structures in steel and cement.

The MoU was signed in the presence of SAIL Chairman C. S. Verma and HPL Chairman and Managing Director Jaiveer Srivastava and Directors and senior executives of both companies. The MoU is the first step by SAIL and HPL towards jointly participating in projects using prefabricated structures in steel and cement.

HCL Infosystems to sell HCL Infinet to Tikona

IT hardware maker HCL Infosystems will sell its wholly owned subsidiary HCL Infinet to internet services provider Tikona Digital Networks.

The sale of shares is subject to and shall be effective post necessary regulatory approvals, HCL InfosystemS.

Amrutanjan, Austin Chemicals form joint venture

Amrutanjan and Austin Chemicals of the U.S. have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture, Amrutanjan Pharmaessense Ltd, for strenthening chemical business. Pharmaessense currently has lab facilities to house 55 scientists.


Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award 2009

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has bagged the “Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award 2009” instituted by the Union Government. KSRTC's Director (Personnel and Environment) (Security and Vigilance) Maaz Ahmed Shariff received the award in New Delhi.

Guptan Nair award for teacher G. Balakrishnan Nair

teacher and Vedanta scholar G. Balakrishnan Nair has been selected for this year's Prof. S. Guptan Nair Award, which is given to scholars who have made significant contributions to the cultural sector. The award, which consists of a plaque, a citation and a purse of Rs.10,000 will be presented to him at a function being held in connection with the fifth death anniversary of Prof. Guptan Nair

Scientists of University of Melbourne and Monash University have developed Australia's first adult induced pluripotent stem cell lines using skin biopsies from patients with the rare genetic disease Friedreich's ataxia (FA).
