‘Sabala Yojana' launched in Rajasthan

Rajasthan Women and Child Development Minister Bina Kak launched the “Sabala Yojana” for empowerment of out-of-school adolescent girls through supplementary nutrition and life skills training at anganwadi centres, ensuring their mental and physical growth, and enabling them to become self-sufficient.

About eight lakh girls in the age group of 11 to 18 years would benefit from the scheme, to be implemented in 10 districts of the State with the Central assistance. The scheme would also encourage teenage girls to join regular schools.


Asian Paints to form second joint venture with PPG Industries

Asian Paints on Monday said it would form a second joint venture with U.S.-based PPG Industries, besides expanding its existing joint venture to accelerate growth of the non-decorative coatings business in India.

Philips to buy Preethi brand

Preethi will come under Philips India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the global major Philips.

This follows an agreement initialled by the promoters of the three-decade-old Maya Appliances Pvt. Ltd., which owns Preethi brand, and Philips. Though an ‘intent to buy' agreement has been inked between the two, it will take around three months for the deal to be consummated.


AITA tennis tournament

The first Marg-AITA tennis tournament with a prize money of Rs. 2.1 lakh will be held at the Madurai Union Club courts from February 14 to 19. The categories are men's singles and doubles.

The event is to be conducted under the auspices of All India Tennis Association, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, and Madurai Tennis Foundation.

Bhagwat is Champion of Champions

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the doyen of Hindustani classical music passes away. The 88-year-old Bharat Ratna awardee.


K. Janardhanan Pillai Endowment Award

P.K. Madhavan Nambiar, veteran Sarvodaya worker and president of the Gandhi Smaraka Grama Seva Kendram, Karadukka, Kasaragod, has been selected for the K. Janardhanan Pillai Endowment Award for the Best Constructive Gandhian Worker 2010.

Presidential Award for distinguished record of service

Additional Commissioner of Customs K.V.V.G. Diwakar of Visakhapatnam, currently working in  Bangalore International Airport, received the Presidential Award for distinguished record of service.
