Meet on computing on January 28, 29

The India Annual Conference of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) will be held at Hyderabad on January 28 and 29. Computing professionals, academics and students will discuss current science and technology trends. It is the first time the Hyderabad chapter of ACM is organising the event Experts like Eric A. Brewer, Charles P. Thacker, Alain Chesnais will participate.




Ashok Chakra for Army doctor

Army doctor Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, who grappled bare-handed with a terrorist in Kabul last year and lost his life, will be posthumously conferred the highest peacetime gallantry award, Ashok Chakra, on the Republic Day.




538-crore scheme for farm reforms

The Union Government has sanctioned a scheme worth Rs.538 crore for reforms in agricultural fields situated in the Gang Canal Project region in northern Rajasthan. The five-year scheme is likely to cover an area measuring 1.83 lakh hectares by 2014-15.

India, Indonesia sign 29 agreements including Extradition Treaty

India and Indonesia on Tuesday signed 29 agreements including Extradition Treaty. These include agreements in the field of oil and natural gas, science and technology, legal assistance, media, Micro, small and medium enterprises and education, mining, infrastructure and manufacturing. The business deals are worth 15.1 billion US Dollars.

Artin Dynamics, a Technopark-based company, has bagged the Magnitude 2011 Award for the corporate-level business plan competition for the best start-up at Technopark.

Gandhi Award for journalism


S. Rajkumar, Kairali TV reporter in Kollam, has been selected for this year's Gandhi Award for journalism.

Mr. Rajkumar was selected for the award for his investigative coverage on the Kerala Public Service Commission examination racket.



Rahman bags WEF Crystal Award


Internationally renowned music composer A.R. Rahman was honoured with the Crystal Award of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at the opening ceremony of its annual meet  being attended by 2,500 global leaders from the fields of business, government, art, culture and religion.

Mr. Rahman, 44, received the award, given to outstanding artists who use their talent for social and charitable work.

N. Ramachandran, President, World Squash Federation, was conferred the “Friendship of Sri Lankan Squash award” at a spectacular opening ceremony of the 15th Asian junior championship in Colombo.

Sri Lankan icon and world record holding spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan, who conferred the “Friendship of Sri Lankan Squash Award,” on Mr. Ramachandran.
