Infant mortality rate decline

The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India has come down to 50 (deaths per 1,000 live births) from 53, showing a reduction of three points as compared to 2008, and eight points since 2005, when the national average was 58.

The latest data released by the Registrar-General of India (RGI) in its Sample Registration System for the calendar year of 2009 shows a nine-point decline in rural IMR during 2005-2009 compared to six points in cities and towns.

The IMR is the lowest in Goa at 11, though it was 10 in 2008, followed by Kerala at 12.




Integrity Test of Reactor Containment successful

Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project's first of the 2 X 1,000 MWe reactors, which is likely to attain criticality in March this year, has successfully crossed the landmark milestone – Integrity Test of Reactor Containment – on the eve of Republic Day.

India-China trade surpasses target

Bilateral trade between India and China exceeded the two countries' $60 billion target last year, driven largely by rising Indian imports of Chinese machinery that have left a record trade imbalance of $20 billion in China's favour.

Figures released for last year showed that bilateral trade in 2010 reached $61.7 billion, with Chinese exports to India touching $40.8 billion.




Food inflation inches up to 15.57 %

Food inflation inched up marginally to 15.57 per cent for the week ended January 15 from 15.52 per cent a week ago as vegetable prices continued to rule firm at higher levels.

Gallantry award

Major Rajiv Shankar has been awarded Sena Medal for Gallantry by the President of India.

This is his fourth award for gallantry. He is already the recipient of Sena Medal and two Mention-in-Despatches for his acts of gallantry



Customs awards presented on International Customs Day on January 26


The day is observed every year on January 26 by customs organisations to commemorate the first meeting of Customs Cooperative Council, also known as World Customs Organisations.


HPCL was given the award for contributing the highest revenue. National Aluminium Company (Nalco) was recognised for being the top exporter. Gangavaram Port Limited got an award for being a fast growing port in the private sector. Awards were given to Merlyn Shipping & Transports and Integral Trading & Logistics respectively for handling highest volume of import cargo by a customs house agent (CHA) and filing highest number of shipping bills.
