Central government award for remarkable implementation of the (MGNREGP)

Nedumgandam grama panchayat in Idukki and Kottukal in Thiruvananthapuram have won the Central government award for remarkable implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (MGNREGP).


CII environmental awards

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) presented its first CII Environmental Best Practices Award-2011 in three categories. 

In all, 34 projects were chosen for the awards presented by Chairman of CII-Andhra Pradesh chapter Shakti Sagar.

The short listed companies had achieved an annual recurring saving of Rs. 177 crore during the last five years besides environmental benefits like amount of waste diverted from landfill (1.7 lakh metric tonnes per annum), amount of raw material saved (1.5 lakh MT p.a.), GHG reduction (66.7 million MT of Cos p.a.) and total water saving (62 million cubic metres p.a.).

Best destination award for Kerala Tourism

‘God's Own Country' has been voted the top travel and tourism destination in the country from among 29 States that vied to become the ‘Favourite Indian State for travel and tourism.'

The award was decided by a survey conducted by noted global consumer-research company Nielsen, among the readers of the magazine, Outlook Traveller. They were polled through the magazine and the magazine's website. The awards were announced in 17 categories.


Clijsters wins her first Australian Open title

Belgium's Kim Clijsters rallied to beat Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the Australian Open final on Saturday, dashing Chinese hopes of a historic first Grand Slam singles title.
After a shaky first set, Clijsters, a three-time US Open champion, fought her way back to overhaul Li in a thrilling final in front of 15,000 fans at Rod Laver Arena.

She became the first Asian player to win a Grand Slam.

New National selection policy announced

As per the new policy — which talks about Moving Average System and the Point Based Ranking System — a shooter will require scores from four competitions to be eligible for selection to the National squad.

Japan wins Asian Cup

Tadanari Lee scored an extra-time winner as Japan edged Australia 1-0 to win a pulsating Asian Cup final and become the most successful team in the history of the competition.
