2011 January Awards

Best destination award for Kerala Tourism. The award was decided by a survey conducted by noted global consumer-research company Nielsen, among the readers of the magazine, Outlook Traveller. They were polled through the magazine and the magazine's website. The awards were announced in 17 categories.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) presented its first CII Environmental Best Practices Award-2011 in three categories. 
In all, 34 projects were chosen for the awards presented by Chairman of CII-Andhra Pradesh chapter Shakti Sagar.

Internationally renowned music composer A.R. Rahman was honoured with the Crystal Award of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at the opening ceremony of its annual meet being attended by 2,500 global leaders from the fields of business, government, art, culture and religion.

Mr. Rahman, 44, received the award, given to outstanding artists who use their talent for social and charitable work.

S. Rajkumar, Kairali TV reporter in Kollam, has been selected for this year's Gandhi Award for journalism.

Additional Commissioner of Customs K.V.V.G. Diwakar of Visakhapatnam, currently working in Bangalore International Airport, received the Presidential Award for distinguished record of service.

P.K. Madhavan Nambiar, veteran Sarvodaya worker and president of the Gandhi Smaraka Grama Seva Kendram, Karadukka, Kasaragod, has been selected for the K. Janardhanan Pillai Endowment Award for the Best Constructive Gandhian Worker 2010.

Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham who is known for his apolitical approach to issues and decision making, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs K.V. Thomas said. He was speaking after presenting the Man of the Decade' award instituted by the People's Forum of Kochi to Mr. Abraham

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh honoured 23 children with the Bravery Awards. Their acts of courage were a source of inspiration for everyone

N. Murali, Senior Managing Director of Kasturi and Sons Limited, was presented the Music Forum award for media excellence instituted by the International Foundation for the Fine Arts.

Mr. Murali is President of the Music Academy, Chennai.

Bharat Jyoti Award for K.V. Raman

Agricultural scientist K.V. Raman has been awarded the prestigious Bharat Jyoti Award of the India International Friendship Society for his contributions to science, technology and development.

The former Election Commissioner, G.V.G. Krishnamurthy, presented the award to Dr. Raman at a function.

Sri Lankan industrialist honoured with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award

President Pratibha Patil presents the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2011 to Sri Lankan industrialist Mano Selvanathan at the Pravai Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi

As an industry leader and one with extensive business interest in Sri lanka and India, Mr. Selvanathan has been instrumental in introducing Indian business to the island nation.

Apart from chairing Sri Lanka's largest chamber of commerce, he was Founder-Chairman of the Indo-Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Mr. Selvanathan pursues a strong interest in philanthropy.

Eminent Malaya, Kaula Lumpur University Vice- Chancelor Acharya Gowth Jasmok has been selected for the prestigious Dr.Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for the year 2011, for his contribution to science and technology, according to A.Jagadeesh, Director of Dr Y Nayudamma center for Devolopment Alternatives.

National Jewellery Awards 2011

Joy Alukkas has won two awards at the ‘National Jewellery Awards 2011' organised by the All-India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF)

The Joy Alukkas showroom in Chennai won the award for the Best Single Retail Store of the Year.' This apart, Joy Alukkas won the award for the ‘Best Retail Jewellery Chain of the Year.'

Apsara awards

Dabangg, the highest grosser of 2010, has emerged the biggest winner at this year's Apsara awards, bagging the Best Film, Best Actor and Best Music trophies.

Dabangg's female lead Sonakshi Sinha took home the Best Debut—Female trophy. The film also won the Best Dialogue award and fetched Sonu Sood the Best Performance in a Negative Role trophy and singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan the Best Male Singer trophy for ‘Tere Mast Mast Do Nain.'

The Best Actor—Female award --- Vidya Balan for Ishqiya  and

Anushka Sharma for Band Baaja Baaraat.

The Best Lyrics trophy went to Gulzar for ‘ Dil to Bachcha Hai Ji' from Ishqiya.

Farah Khan won the Best Choreography Song for ‘Sheila Ki Jawani' from her directorial Tees Maar Khan.

Ranveer Singh won the Best Debut—Male trophy for Band Baaja Baaraat

Maneesh Sharma bagged the Best Debut—Director award for the same film.

Mamata Sharma and Sunidhi Chauhan shared the Best Female Singer award for their respective item song ‘Munni Badnaam Hui' ( Dabangg) and ‘Sheila Ki Jawani'

Arjun Rampal's role in Raajneeti got him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role—Male award

Prachi Desai won the trophy in the female category for her turn in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai.

Actors Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan were handed special honours for their roles in Paa, as was Rajkumar Hirani for directing 3 Idiots.

The Best Performance in a Comic Role award -- Paresh Rawal for the film Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge

The London-bassed Indian writer, Ms Kishwar Desai has won UK's prestigious Costa First Novel Award 2010 for her book "Witness by Night" which addresses issues like unwanted girl child, gender prejudices and bias and men-woman equality.

Bollywood actor Vivek Oberai received the "Youth Icon Award" from Art of living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar as part of the Vivekananda birth anniversary celebrations.

A.R. Rahman wins Critics' Choice award.

Music composer A.R. Rahman bagged the best original song trophy at the 16th Critics' Choice Awards for his number “If I Rise” in Danny Boyle's film 127 Hours. Written by Rollo Armstrong and American artiste Dido, the song was performed by Rahman and Dido. It is also expected to get Rahman his second Golden Globe this year.

Boyle, who went on to score eight Oscars with his Slumdog Millionaire, collaborated with Rahman again for 127 Hours, a biopic on the life of mountain climber Aron Ralston.

The Golden Globe Awards are sponsored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to recognise excellence in film, television both domestic and foreign

The Social Network, a film about Harvard-graduate Mark Zuckerberg's ultra-popular Facebook website, swept up four awards at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards

Mr. Rahman, who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Original Score for “If I Rise”, from director Danny Boyle's 127 Hours

Other notable winners included The Social Network, for Best Motion Picture; Colin Firth for best performance by an actor in The King's Speech; Natalie Portman for best performance by an actress in The Black Swan; The Kids are Alright, for best comedy or musical and Christian Bale for best actor in a supporting role in The Fighter. Paul Giamatti scooped up the laurel for Best Actor in a comedy film for his role in Barney's Version.

Darla Nageswara Rao working in A.P.Govt. Central Press, invented a new concept of Replica art of newspapers. He entered Global World Records. He has entered the Limca Book of World Records in 2006,2008,2009,2010. He replicated newspapers of five Indian languages with the same dimensions and two years later, he repeated the feat in 13 languages, including Arabic and Assamese.

Indology Award

Soka Gakkai International general director Yoshitaka Oba receives the first Motilal Banarsidass Indology Award on behalf of SGI president Daisaku Ikeda from Union Culture Secretary Jawhar Sircar in New Delhi over the weekend. Dr. Ikeda has been honoured for his contribution in the field of Indic Research and Oriental Wisdom

Telivision actress Swetha Tiwari won the reality show 'Bigboss-4' at Lonavana. Swetha received winner's trophy and 1 crore rupees. She became the first women to win the title of the Big Boss.

Moortidevi Award for Akkitham

Renowned poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri being chosen for the prestigious Moortidevi Award of the Bharatiya Jnanpith for 2009. O.N.V. Kurup had been chosen for the Jnanpith Award late last year and the award is to be presented to him here on February 11.

Achuthan Namboodiri, known by his nom-de-plume Akkitham, has been chosen for the award for his selected poems. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.2 lakh, citation and a statuette of Goddess Saraswati.

Tarun Tejpal, Editor of Tehelka, received the "Award for Excellence in Journalism for 2010" from Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily in New Delhi.


The Institute of Economic Studies, New Delhi, one of the country's premier research institutes, has announced the "Udyog Rattan Award" to Vishal Manchala, Founder Director and CEO of Vast Technologies Private Limited.

Also the company has been awarded the "Excellence Award" for the year 2010. His Excellency Mr. Korn Dabbransi, former Prime Minister of Thailand presented the award at the seminar on "Indo-Thai Economic cooperation" in Bangkok, Thailand.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has bagged the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award 2009” instituted by the Union Government. KSRTC's Director (Personnel and Environment) (Security and Vigilance) Maaz Ahmed Shariff received the award in New Delhi.

Teacher and Vedanta scholar G. Balakrishnan Nair has been selected for this year's Prof. S. Guptan Nair Award, which is given to scholars who have made significant contributions to the cultural sector. The award, which consists of a plaque, a citation and a purse of Rs.10,000 will be presented to him at a function being held in connection with the fifth death anniversary of Prof. Guptan Nair

Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit meet Bravery Award winners

Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday met the National Bravery Award winners and lauded their role in not only saving the lives of others by showing exemplary courage and strength but also performing their duty towards humanity.

The National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) has bagged the special recognition award for innovative products, like cost-effective housing, at the recent 98th Indian Science Congress in Chennai.


Movie Director Bapu and Poet Mullapudi Venkata Ramana were selected for "NTR Lalitha Kala Award" for 2010-11 Year. NTR Vignan Trust will give this award.

Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2010

Noted Odissi dancer, choreographer, teacher and arts administrator Aruna Mohanty will be the recipient of the coveted Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2010.

MacArthur Foundation award

Eleven organisations based in six countries, including one in India, will receive the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced in Chicago. These constitute grants of $350,000 to $1 million each.

The organisations' missions range from protecting biodiversity to fighting poverty, analysing how tax policy impacts people to improving maternal and child health among the impoverished.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Hyderabad, bagged the First prize in the 'Best Suggestor Award' category at the 21st Inssan National Convention held in Pune .

Karnataka District Collector P.B. Salim has been selected for the Election Commission's national excellence award. Dr. Salim, who is also the district election officer, was selected for the award based on a presentation regarding the latest methods of handling electoral rolls, an official press release here on Friday said.

Dr. Salim made the presentation during a national-level symposium organised by the Election Commission in Bangalore on May 12, 2010.

Four bank managers get awards for promoting solar energy

Four bank managers have won awards instituted by USAID, WINROCK International India, and the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for promoting solar energy. These officers extended maximum financial assistance for installing solar lighting systems in rural areas.

Rama Shankar Dubey, manager of Balamau branch of Aryavart Grameena Bank in Uttar Pradesh, bagged first prize in Zone I comprising eight States in northern and western India.

Raj Pal Verma, manager of Gondwa branch of the same bank in Uttar Pradesh, bagged the second prize.

M.V. Nilanjanmath, manager of Jainapur branch of Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank in Bijapur district, and

A.B. Torvi, manager of Telsang branch of the same bank in Belgaum district, won the first and second prize, respectively, in Zone II comprising seven States in South and East India. The award includes a cash prize and a citation

Deepak Lalwani, a London-based NRI investment consultant specialising on India, has been presented with an "Order of British Empire" (OBE) honour. Prince Charles conferred the honour on Lalwani at Buckingham Palace, in recognition of his contributions to the financial services'' industry.

Natalie Portman, who won the best actress Golden Glob for "Black Swan", 'Colin Firth' chosen best actor for his role in "The King”, at an awards party in Beverly Hills, California

Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance has been awarded the SKOCH Financial Inclusion Award 2011 in recognition of its micro-insurance product catering the rural market by its plan called 'Sarve/Swayam Shakti Suraksha (SSS).

Suprasannacharya Selected for the "Hussain sha kavi Puraskar" Award. This award has been given from 2001 year.

Nine girls and 14 boys have been selected for the National Bravery Awards-2010. The children received the awards from Prime Minister of India. The youngest award winner this year is six-year-old Shrawan Kumar from Rajasthan. He rescued a one-year-old girl and her two-and-half-year-old sister from a burning hut in Sarneshwar village.
