ISRO to implement regional navigation satellite system

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to implement the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) to provide India and neighboring countries with the Position Navigation and Timing (PNT) service, S.V. Kibe, Brahmprakash Professor in the ISRO Headquarters, Bangalore, said.

At present, two space navigation systems operate in the world — the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). ;The Galileo of Europe and China's COMPASS (Beidou) are likely to start working in five to 10 years.



Suchitra Mitra passes away

Suchitra Mitra, legendary exponent of Rabindra Sangeet (Rabindranath Tagore's songs), died in her South Kolkata residence after protracted illness. She was 86.



A.K. Singh to head Southern Command
Lt. Gen. A.K. Singh, General Officer Commanding of the prestigious Strike Corps on the Western Front has been promoted as the Army Commander and re designated as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief.

Lt. Gen. Singh, is scheduled to take over as the Chief of the Southern Command.



Dilma Rousseff takes charge in Brazil

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff began her first full day in office ; after pledging to build on the policies of her hugely popular predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.



Former Lok Sabha Speaker Baliram Bhagat passes away

The veteran Congress leader served as Speaker of the fifth Lok Sabha for about a year during the Emergency after his election to the post on January 6, 1976.

Apart from holding several posts in the Union Cabinet, Mr. Bhagat also served as Governor of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan from 1993-98.



India joins UNSC as non-permanent member

After a gap of 19 years, India has joined the United Nations Security Council as its non-permanent member for a two-year term, hoping that the seat at the high table will not only cement its place as a key global player but also pave the way for becoming a permanent member of the powerful wing of the world body.

On January 1, India, along with Germany, Portugal, South Africa and Columbia, became a non-permanent member of this 15-member body.



Parnaik takes charge as head of Northern Command

Lieutenant-General K.T. Parnaik took over command of the prestigious Northern Command at Udhampur. He succeeds Lieutenant-General B.S. Jaiswal



Browne takes charge as IAF Vice-Chief 

Air Marshal N.A.K. Browne assumed charge as Vice-Chief of the Indian Air Force here on Saturday. He succeeds Air Marshal P.K. Barbora, who retired.



GSLV failure is snapping: ISRO


A Preliminary Failure Analysis Team constituted to study the flight data of GSLV-F06, which crashed seconds after its launch on December 25, said that the primary cause of the failure was “the untimely and inadvertent” snapping of a group of 10 connectors located at the base of the Russian Cryogenic stage.



CIRUS shut down

CIRUS, a 50-year-old research reactor and India's symbol of the civil and military nuclear programme, was shut down permanently at midnight on Thursday as per India's commitment under its civil nuclear deal with the United States
