Sri Lankan industrialist honoured with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award

President Pratibha Patil presents the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2011 to Sri Lankan industrialist Mano Selvanathan at the Pravai Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi


As an industry leader and one with extensive business interest in Sri lanka and India, Mr. Selvanathan has been instrumental in introducing Indian business to the island nation.

Apart from chairing Sri Lanka's largest chamber of commerce, he was Founder-Chairman of the Indo-Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Mr. Selvanathan pursues a strong interest in philanthropy.



Bharat Jyoti Award for K.V. Raman

Agricultural scientist K.V. Raman has been awarded the prestigious Bharat Jyoti Award of the India International Friendship Society for his contributions to science, technology and development.

A former Chairman of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Dr. Raman was also Director of the B.V. Rao Centre for Sustainable Food Security at the Chennai-based M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.

The former Election Commissioner, G.V.G. Krishnamurthy, presented the award to Dr. Raman at a function here on Friday.



Baldev Raj is INAE's new chief

Baldev Raj, Director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam has been elected president of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE).

The academy is a peer body of distinguished engineers, scientists and technologists covering the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines.



NABARD ties up with Reuters for providing market information to farmers

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has entered into a tie-up with the international news agency Thompson Reuters' Indian subsidiary to provide market information to farmers.

The one year programme is being introduced in Tamil Nadu from January as a pilot project by NABARD with Reuters Market Light (RML), a unit of Thomson Reuters India, contracted to provide information to farmers through Short Message Service (SMS), R. Shankar Narayan, NABARD Assistant General Manager, told



Muziris Heritage Project to open on February 18

The Muziris Heritage Project, a unique tourism and heritage conservation project linking monuments in the area surrounding the bygone 2,000-year-old Muziris port, will be opened to the public next month.

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, the prime mover of the project, told that the site would be opened on February 18 by Union Tourism Minister Selja. Most of the work being undertaken as part of the project would be ready by then, he said.
