World Philatelic Exhibition

INDIPEX 2011: The World Philatelic Exhibition began at  Pragati Maidan on Febraury 12th.

The aim of the exhibition is to promote philately and provide a forum for interaction between philatelic stakeholders like collectors, dealers, stamp designers and printers, and postal administrations.

There are 595 collectors from 70 countries who will be participating in the exhibition, apart from 28 philatelic dealers and 31 postal administrations.

The exhibition will largely focus on aero philately as India Post celebrates the centenary of the first air-mail flight which took place in the country on February 18, 1911. The ceremonial flight would take place on February 18, 2011, from Allahabad to Naini commemorating the centenary of the air-mail flight. 


Panel for revamping crop data collection

The Vaidyanathan Committee of Experts on Agricultural Statistics has recommended restructuring of the methodology for collection of farm statistics in a phased manner to ensure objective, reliable and timely estimates of crop areas and yields.

It has suggested setting up of a National Crop Statistics Centre (NCSC) as the nodal agency to undertake the work in collaboration with the Departments of Agriculture and Space.


Industrial growth plunges to 1.6 %

The industrial production plunged to a 20-month low of 1.6 per cent in December against 18.1 per cent growth during the same period last year, notwithstanding the 8.6 per cent GDP growth being projected by the government.

BEL signs MoU with French company

Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Safran Sagem, a French electronics and communications company, have signed an MoU to develop land navigation and artillery-pointing applications.

SAIL to invest Rs. 5,000 cr to develop Chiria mines

Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) on Friday said it planned to invest around Rs.5,000 crore to develop the mines in Chiria and start mechanised mining in the next three years to feed its plants in Bokaro, Burnpur, Durgapur and Rourkela.

Nokia joins hands with Microsoft

World's largest cell phone maker Nokia and software giant Microsoft will form a broad strategic partnership, a move that will help them to fight stiff competition from rivals Apple and Google in the smartphone market.

O.N.V. Kurup receives Jnanpith Award

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented 43 rd Jnanpith Award to poet O.N.V. Kurup for cross-translation of more literary texts into different Indian languages to make people aware of the richness of the country's literature.

Jayati Ghosh awarded ILO prize

The International Labour Organisation's Decent Work Research Prize has been awarded to economist Jayati Ghosh and Professor Eve Landau.

K.R. Narayanan Award

Poet O.N.V. Kurup has been selected for this year's K.R. Narayanan Award. According to K.R. Narayanan Foundation general secretary Aby J. Jose, the award, consisting of a memento and a citation, will be presented to the poet on February 19 by the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
