Karnataka


Karnataka the land of the Kannadigas, is a state in South West India.

It was created on 1 November 1956, with the passing of the States Reorganisation Act.

Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was renamed Karnataka in 1973.

Bangalore is the capital city of the state.

Karnataka is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Goa to the northwest, Maharashtra to the north, Andhra Pradesh to the east, Tamil Nadu to the southeast, and Kerala to the southwest.

The state covers an area of 191,976 square kilometres  or 5.83% of the total geographical area of India.

It is the eighth largest Indian state by area,  and comprises 30 districts.

Kannada is the official and most widely spoken language, and English is also valid for official use.

Karnataka is derived from the Kannada words karu and nādu, meaning elevated land. Karu nadu may also be read as Karu (black) and nadu (region), as a reference to the black cotton soil found in the Bayaluseeme region of Karnataka.

The British used the word Carnatic (sometimes Karnatak) to describe both sides of peninsular India, south of the Krishna River.

Several Wildlife protection schemes such as Project Tiger and Project Elephant are being implemented with the Central assistance.

The country's First Green Field International Airport has been set up at Devanahalli near Bengaluru at a cost of Rs.2000 crore as a passenger and Cargo hub under Public Private Partnership and has started functioning from 28th May, 2008.

The 'Garden City' of Bangalore has been adjusted the cleanest city in India.

Gersoppa ( Jog Falls) of Karnataka is world famous and is the highest waterfall in India.

Gol Gumbaz at Bijapur, has the second largest pre-modern dome in the world after the Byzantine Hagia Sophia.

The Gomateswara (982–983) monolith at Shravanabelagola is one of the foremost centers of Jain pilgrimage.

Mysore city is famous for Mysore Palace.
