Russia's highest honour for Gorbachev

The last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, was awarded Russia's top medal on his 80th birthday in a late and almost reluctant recognition of his services.

The Order of St. Andrew conferred on Mr. Gorbachev is the first and only award he has received in the past 20 years since his resignation in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Union Cabinet cleared the child protection bill

The Union Cabinet cleared a bill seeking to prevent sexual abuse of children, with provisions for stringent punishment for such offences.

The proposed legislation aims at protecting children against offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment, pornography and provides for establishment of special courts for trial of such offences.

The punishment for penetrative sexual assault has been proposed at a minimum of five years in jail and a minimum fine of Rs. 50,000. Sexual assault also includes fondling the child in an inappropriate way, and will invite a penalty of a minimum of three years in jail.


CPCRI develops new technology to extract virgin coconut oil

Scientists at the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasaragod, have developed an indigenous technology to extract virgin coconut oil from fresh coconut kernels.

coconut oil is extracted from copra. Oil extracted from fresh coconut kernels is called virgin coconut oil.


Japan granted for Indian NGO

The Government of Japan has decided to extend a grant of over USD 1 lakh to an Indian NGO working for community healthcare. The assistance of USD 1,02,640 (nearly Rs.46 lakh) is being given to Asha Community Health and Development Society to support its mobile health van service.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) concluded that India has emerged as one of the top ten manufacturers of the world in 2010, driven mainly by its strong economic growth.

Telecom company MTS (Mobile TeleSystems OJSC) announced the appointment of Andrei Dubovskov as President and Chief Executive Officer of the company.

The refrigeration and air conditioning division of Danfoss, a leader in energy-efficient solutions, has received the Green Product Award at Acrex 2011 exhibition for its environment-friendly micro channel heat exchanger (MCHE). The exhibition was held recently in New Delhi.

“Amrutanjan Health Care has entered into an agreement with Siva's Soft Drink Pvt. Ltd, Chennai, to acquire their soft drink and fruit based beverages business along with the brand ‘Fruitnik' for a total consideration of Rs.26.20 crore,”

The former Nepal Prime Minister and founding member of the Nepali Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai died. He was 87.
He became the Speaker of Nepal's first elected Parliament in 1959.



Astrophysicist Radhakrishnan passes away

Eminent astrophysicist Venkatraman Radhakrishnan, who is known for his work on pulsars, passed away.


Goga Kapoor passes away
Veteran character actor Ravinder Kapoor, popularly known as Goga Kapoor, passed away after prolonged illness. He was 70.
