The Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Schools and Intermediate Colleges Bill, 2011

To protect the interests of students seeking admission, the Centre is planning a law to check unfair practices in schools, ranging from donations and nexus with coaching centres.

The law will provide for civil and criminal penalties and liabilities for violations and is substantially patterned on the Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Technical, Medical Educational Institutions and Universities Bill, 2011, which is awaiting Parliamentary clearance.

Prakash Chandra is new CBDT chief

Prakash Chandra, (1973 batch Indian Revenue Service) took over as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He replaces Sudhir Chandra, also a 1973 batch IRS officer.

Lt. Gen. Kakria is new Armed Forces Medical Services chief

Lieutenant General H.L. Kakria took over as Director-General of the Armed Forces Medical Services. Prior to this, he was the Director-General, Medical Services (Army).

Bhajan Lal passes away

Veteran politician, a former Haryana Chief Minister and sitting Hisar Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) MP Bhajan Lal (80) died in Hisar following a massive heart attack.

New chairperson for Spices Board

Sheela Thomas, serving as Chairperson of the Rubber Board, has assumed additional charge of Chairperson, Spices Board.

Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitra took charge as the Finance Secretary in place of Sushama Nath, who superannuated on May 31 following the completion of her extended tenure.

Yogendra Pal Singh, new chief for ACSU

Yogendra Pal Singh, former joint director of India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has replaced Ravi Sawani as the head of the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The council presented this prestigious award at London on the May 20. The award was received by Mr. Farshu on behalf of KCP and Mr. Murthy on behalf of the L&T. The council had surveyed worldwide on “Safety and Health” and allotted rating points of 67 out of 70.

International Safety Award 2010

The L&T – KCP project has bagged prestigious “International Safety Award 2010” for their Cement Unit – II at Muktyala village in Jaggayyapeta Mandal of Krishna district, (Andhra Pradesh) from the British Safety Council. 

Kochi refinery wins pollution control award

The refinery of Bharat Petroleum Corporation in Kochi and HLL Lifecare Limited in Thiruvananthapuram have won the awards instituted by the State government for excellence in pollution control among very large and large industries.

First places in pollution control have been taken by MRF Limited, Kottayam, and Philips Carbon Black Limited, Ernakulam.

DRDO Scientistof the Year Award

G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientist ‘G' Director, Inertial Systems of Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a Hyderabad-based premier laboratory of the Missile Complex has been conferred with prestigious ‘DRDO Scientist of the Year Award' for 2010 by Defence Minister A.K. Antony at a function at Delhi.

History-maker Li Na wins French Open

Li Na made sporting history at the French Open became the first player from China to win a Grand Slam singles title.

The 29-year-old from Wuhan defeated defending champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-4, 7-6(0) to take her place in the pantheon of Chinese sports stars.
