Russia's state-owned nuclear corporation plans to set up joint ventures with Indian companies to manufacture power generation equipment.

Hyderabad to host global biodiversity meet in 2012

Hyderabad has been choosen for hosting the prestigious 11th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in October 2012. The conference will be attended by representatives from 194 countries, including some Prime Ministers.

Prithvi-II successfully flight-tested

Nuclear weapons-capable, surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile was successfully flight-tested for its full range of 350 km by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) personnel.

The nine-metre tall Prithvi-II, the first indigenously built surface-to-surface strategic missile, was fired from a mobile launcher from Launch Complex-III at the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Orissa.

Pension age limit lowered to 60

The Union government lowered the age limit for the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAP) from 65 to 60 years, and increased pension for those above 80 from Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 a month.

The eligibility criteria under the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme and the Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme will stand revised from 40-64 to 40-59 years and from 18-64 to 18-59 respectively.

Free and compulsory education to be extended up to class X

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, provides for free and mandatory education only up to primary level – from Class I to VIII.
The provision of free and compulsory education will soon be extended up to Class X.

A proposal to this effect was approved at a meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) — the highest decision-making body on education in the country

India to buy C-17 heavy-lift transport aircraft from U.S.

India decided to purchase 10 C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft from the U.S. for the Indian Air Force. The deal under the Foreign Military Sales (Government-to-Government) is estimated to cost Rs. 18,000 crore (approximately $4.1 billion).

M.F. Husain, celebrated artist, passes away in London

M.F. Husain, India's foremost modern painter and an internationally recognised artist, passed away. He was 97.

M. Thamizhaiah, new chairman for ICAI branch

M. Thamizhaiah was elected as the chairman of the Kumbakonam branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, for the year 2011-12.

Ali Javed, an Urdu writer and professor at Delhi University, has been elected general secretary of the Progressive Writers' Association (PWA).

Boxing champion Hernandez dead

Hernandez(right, in pic), a two-time super featherweight World champion, has died at his California home after a battle with cancer at the age of 45.

He was the World Boxing Association super featherweight champion from 1991 to 1994 and World Boxing Council super featherweight champ from 1997 to 1998.

K.S. Subramanian, new director of HSL

Commodore K.S. Subramanian has assumed charge as Director (Ship Building) of Hindustan Shipyard Limited.

Nadal claims sixth French Open

Rafael Nadal won a 10th Grand Slam crown, and equalled Bjorn Borg's record of six French Open titles, when he defeated Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-1.

Nadal, who was also champion in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010, took his overall Paris record to 45 wins against just one defeat, and victory also meant he hangs on to his World No. 1 spot.
