21.03 Lakh hectare brought under horticulture crops through NHM initiatives



An area of about 21.03 lakh hectare of new gardens has been brought under various horticulture crops with various initiatives under National Horticulture Mission (NHM) so far.

An area of 1.40 lakh hectare has been covered under organic farming and 252071 vermi compost units have been set up. An area of 9.34 lakh hectare has been brought under INM/IPM.

2376 new nurseries have been set up and vegetable seed produced in 24708 hectare area and 202 seed infrastructures established so far. Funds have been provided for setting up 77 Disease Forecasting Units, 97 Bio Control Labs, 128 Plant Health Clinics, 77 Leaf/Tissue Analysis Lab. 23371 community water harvesting tanks/ponds have been created for providing critical irrigation support to horticultural crops. 18356 power operated machines have been provided under horticulture mechanization component.

Under the post harvest management component, funds have been provided for establishment of 3574 pack houses, 477 cold storage units, 6 CA storage, 33 refrigerated vans, 627 mobile/primary processing, 731 low cost onion storage structures, 81 ripening chambers. Under the market component, 24 whole sale markets, 183 rural markets, 115 functional infrastructures for collection, grading etc, 17 retail markets/outlets and 30 mobile vending hand carts have been established for proper handling and marketing of horticulture produce. Over 9 lakh farmers have been trained under various horticultural activities.

NHM interventions have generated a momentum in the overall growth in horticulture sector with increase in area and production from 18.45 million hectare and 166.9 million tonne in 2004-05 to 21 million hectare and 240 million tonne in 2010-11 respectively. From 2005-06 to 2011-12 (upto January, 2012), an amount of Rs. 6209.30 crore was released to implementing agencies, against which, an expenditure of Rs. 6016.91 crore has been incurred.

At present, 372 districts in the 18 States and 3 Union Territories are covered under NHM. Eight North Eastern States including Sikkim and the States of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand are covered under the Horticulture Mission for North East & Himalayan States (HMNEHS).
