Assam registered a 14 Percent Increase in the Rhinos Population in Last Three Years



Assam registered a 14 per cent increase in the Rhinos population in last three years as per the Rhino census concluded on 8 April 2012. 

The number of Rhinos in the state is now over 2 thousand five hundred in the latest census. It was 2 thousand two hundred rhinos in 2009. 

2290 rhinos were found in the Kaziranga National Park while 100 rhinos were found in Orang National Park and another 93 in Pobitora Sanctuary.

Assam has the highest number of one-horned rhino in the world. The state recorded an increase of over 800 rhinos in the last 10 years. The recent census was conducted by 300 forest personnel with the help of 30 trained elephants and under the monitoring of independent organizations. 

The World Heritage site, Kaziranga National park sheltered the highest rhinos at 2 thousand 290 followed by 100 at the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National park and 93 at Pobitora Sancutary. 

Out of the total rhinos found at Kaziranga, there were 658 male rhinos, 311 female rhinos and 519 calves, among others.
