India and Afghanistan have signed MOU in Iron & Steel sector




India and Afghanistan have signed a historic memorandum of understanding for mutual cooperation in the field of iron and steel sector. Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma and the Afghan’s Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani signed the MOU in Kabul in the presence of senior officials of the concerned ministries of the two countries.

The MOU aims at paving the way for institution and capacity building in the Afghanistan’s iron and steel sector. It will promote economic cooperation between the two countries and encourage public and private sector Indian companies to invest in mineral rich Afghanistan. 

The strategic partnership between the two countries will get further boost by the memorandum of understanding signed.

India is one of the largest contributors and donors to the economic development of Afghanistan. The two countries have signed a number of MOUs in different spheres, including mines and minerals, natural gas, and commerce & industry. 

In October last year Afghanistan and India signed historic strategic partnership agreement heralding the beginning of a new era in their relations.

A consortium headed by the public sector Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and consisting of six other companies, has bagged license for Hajigak iron ore project in Afghanistan. With the signing of MOU, an important stage in the Indo-Afghan cooperation in the field of mines and minerals have been completed. It is hoped that it will pave the way for the cooperation in the fields of fertilizers and chemicals, coal and other mineral sectors also.

Earlier the visiting Indian delegation led by the minister for Steel Beni Prasad Verma met with the Afghan minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani. Both sides shared views on working together in the development of iron ore mines. 

Mr Shahrani briefed the Indian delegation about the mineral potential in Afghanistan and reforms underway in the mines sector. Reiterating India’s commitment to the development of Afghanistan Mr Verma said that mineral resources in Afghanistan will be drivers of country’s economic development.
