International Issues

Two day summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) begins in Chicago. Leaders and heads of more than 50 nations and international organizations are likely to attend the summit.

President Hamid Karzai and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari have also arrived in Chicago to participate in the summit. This crucial summit will decide the exit strategy for the NATO-led international forces in Afghanistan and the future course of action for stabilization process in the war torn country.

International forces in are following the exit strategy chalked out in the last NATO summit in Libon which provides for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

However, the summit will also to address the the concerns regarding post-2014 security situation in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has already entered into long term security partnership agreements with some countries. Some other countries may confirm their commitment for supporting Afghan security forces during the Chicago summit.

National Issues

The Centre has asked all states to initiate deportation proceedings against any foreigner involved in prostitution if the woman is a victim of human trafficking rather than prosecuting her in a court.

In an advisory to all states, the Home Ministry said if after investigation, the woman or the child is found to be a victim, she should not be prosecuted under the Foreigners Act and immediate steps should be taken for her repatriation to her country of origin.

The country's food grain production is projected to grow by 0.6 percent to 247.6 million tonnes (mt) in 2012-13 as against 246.2 mt in 2011-12.

A modest growth in output of rice and wheat along with a recovery in production of coarse grains and pulses will be responsible for the overall growth, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said in its monthly report.

Economic Issues

To minimise risk associated with direct stock investment for new investors, market regulator SEBI has asked the government to route the tax-saving Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme through mutual fund (MF).

Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) U. K. Sinha, said the regulator had submitted a proposal in this regard to the Finance Ministry.


World number one defending champion Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer to set up a Rome Masters final rematch with five-time winner Rafael Nadal.

Top seed Djokovic ended Federer's brilliant run, defeating the world number two, and last week's Madrid champion, 6-2, 7-6 while Nadal reached a seventh Rome final, with a 7-6 , 6-0 win over compatriot David Ferrer.

After defeating Federer for the 12th consecutive time, Nadal will face Djokovic for the 32nd time, with the Spaniard going into the contest holding a 17-14 lead.

English Football Club, Chelsea has won its maiden UEFA Champions League title. Chelsea edged past hosts and German football giants Bayern Munich in penalty shoot outs, after a 1-1 draw, in the finals of the Championships, played in Munich


Two agricultural scientists from ICAR institutions – R. Sai Kumar of the Directorate of Maize Research (DMR) and N. Shobha Rani of the Directorate of Rice Research (DRR) – were jointly awarded the fourth MS Swaminathan Award for outstanding agricultural research.

The awards were given away by LSP president Jayaprakash Narayan and Director-General of ICRISAT William Dar.
