July 2018 Awards

  • Two Indians among 2018 Ramon Magsaysay Award winnersTwo Indians, Bharat Vatwani and SonamWangchuk, are among six who have been declared winners of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred to as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize. 

    Bharat Vatwani is a psychiatrist who works for mentally-ill people living on the streets and SonamWangchuk, known for his reforms in the education sector in Ladakh, started a movement to help poor village student’s clear examinations. 

    The others award winners are from Cambodia, East Timor, Philippines and Vietnam. 

    Established in 1957, the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asia's highest honour. 
  • The English Patient’ By Michael Ondaatje Declared 'Best Booker Prize Winner in 50 Years'Michael Ondaatje’s bestselling novel 'The English Patient' was announced as the winner of the Golden Man Booker Prize at the Southbank Centre in London. 

    The prize was instituted as part of celebrations to mark the Booker’s having completed 50 years. 
  • Hima Das won Gold Medal in Women’s 400m event at IAAF World U-20 Athletics ChampionshipsNo athlete from the nation of India has ever won a gold medal in track and field at the Summer Olympics. 

    No female athlete from the nation of 1.3 billion has ever medaled in any track event at the games, period. 

    Hima Das fledgling sprinter took home the nation’s first gold medal in major track event using a furious kick down the final straightaway to handily win the 400 meters under-20 world title. 

    She’s the first runner in India’s history to medal in the IAAF’s junior championship and hails from Assam. 
  • Indian students bag three silver and two bronze medals in 59th International Mathematical OlympiadA team of Indian students bagged three silver and two bronze medals at the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Cluj Napoca, Romania from July 4 - 14, 2018. 

    Three of the six Indian students bagged Silver medals, two got Bronze medals and one received honorable mention. 

    Pranjal Srivastava, Pulkit Sinha and Anant Mudgal secured silver medals; Spandan Ghosh and Sutanay Bhattacharya won Bronze Medals, and Amit Kumar Mallik received Honorable mention in this International Mathematical Olympiad 2018. 

    Among the above six, Pranjal Srivastava (Age 14) is the youngest Indian student to secure a silver medal in IMO 2018. 
  • Milan Tare wins National AwardMilan Tare, a fisherman from Satpati village in Palghar, saved 12 crew members in a two-hour operation. According to a Coast Guard official, Tare will receive the National Maritime Search and Rescue (NMSAR) Award at a function at Vigyan Bhavan on July 5 chaired by Coast Guard DG Rajendra Singh. 
  • Swachhata Awards 2018 of MSME Ministry NSIC, KVIC and Coir BoardMinistry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) celebrated Swachhata Pakhwada from 16th to 30th June, 2018. Union Minister of State (I/C), Giriraj Singh distributed the Awards at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi 4th July. Industrial Clusters, Industry Associations and field offices of National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC), Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), DC (MSME), Coir Board were felicitated for their contribution to Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. 

    This is the second year, when the Ministry gave Swachhata Awards and created a healthy competition amongst industrial clusters and estates and its field offices for Swachhata. 

    During the Swachhata Pakhwada, Ministry and its subordinate organisations like KVIC, NSIC, National Institute for MSME and MSME-Development Institutes undertook a variety of activities like rain-water harvesting, construction of garbage pits for its conversion to manure, adoption of toilets in government schools for maintenance. 

    The KVIC adopted Jagatpura Village in New Delhi for one year so as to make it a model Swachh Village. In addition, awareness campaigns and seminars on new and innovative technologies on cleanliness were organised. Children were also associated with activities like tree plantation drives, painting, essay and slogan writing competitions. 

    Ministry and its field organisations have undertaken cleanliness drives across the country covering 11 villages and blocks, 4 slums, 5 market places, 3 river sides, 2 railway stations, 3 bus stops and a sea beach at Puri in Odisha. In addition, 8 public toilets, 5 residential colonies and one park have been adopted for one year.
