March 2018 Awards

  • Y.K.SinhaSouth Asian Cinema Foundation (SACF), a London based organisation has received the Frederick Pincott Award for 2017 from the Indian High Commissioner, Y K Sinha for promoting Hindi cinema in Britain for the last 18 years. 

    The institution has been active in boosting original research and books on Indian films, also inviting and honouring filmmakers from India, along with documentary film making and producing classic silent films with live music at the British Film Institute (BFI). 

    The SACF was set up in London in January 2000 by Joshi, along with film archivist P K Nair, film critic Derek Malcolm and social historian-researcher Kusum Pant Joshi.
  • Oscar Winners 2018Two decades after winning her first Academy Award, Frances McDormand took home her second Oscar. The 60-year-old actress claimed the Best Actress award for the movie, 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri', at the awards ceremony held at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, other winners are:
    • Gary Oldman won the Oscar for the Best Actor for his work in 'Darkest Hour'.
    • Allison Janney took home the coveted Best Supporting Actress award for 'I, Tonya',
    • Sam Rockwell won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
    • Guillermo del Toro's inter-species fantasy drama "The Shape of Water" bagged the Best Picture award.
    • Chilean film 'A Fantastic Woman' won the Oscar for the Best Foreign language film.
    Legendary Indian actors Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi, who passed away recently, featured in the 'In Memoriam' section at the awards. The segment pays tribute to artists who passed away this year. 
  • Balkrishna Doshi awarded Pritzker Prize 2018Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi has been awarded Pritzker Prize 2018 for being able to interpret architecture and transform it into buildings that respect Eastern culture. The Pritzker Prize is regarded as architecture's equivalent to the Nobel Prize. 

    Long considered to be one of India's foremost living architects and urban planners, Doshi is widely known for designing extensive low-cost housing projects and public institutions. Efe reported that the judging panel said it recognized the Pune-born architect for his exceptional work, his commitment and dedication to his country and its communities, his influence as a professor and for always being an excellent example for professionals and students the world over. 
  • Shatrughan Sinha: Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the fields of arts and politics. 

    The annual Political and Public Life Awards instituted by Britain's Asian Voice weekly newspaper was presented at a ceremony in the UK's Parliament complex in London 

    Sinha, who started his career as an actor in late 1960s, has to his credit over 225 Hindi feature films besides several in other Indian languages.
