International :

  • Global Hunger Index 2019 : 

    1.) India’s ranking in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2019 brought out by Concern World Wide is 102 out of 117 countries. India’s ranking in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2018 was 103. 

    2.) As per GHI Report 2019 of Concern World Wide, the composite GHI scores of India have improved from 38.8 in 2000 to 30.3 in 2019. But, India is ranked below Pakistan (94), Bangladesh (88), Nepal (73) and Sri Lanka (66) among other South Asian countries. In India, only 9.6% of all children between 6 to 23 months of age are given a minimum acceptable diet. 

    3.) As per the report, the child wasting rate is the highest (20.8%) in the world while the child stunting rate is 37.9% in India. 

    4.) The 2019 GHI measures hunger in 117 countries where the assessment is most relevant and where data on all four component indicators are available. 

    5.) 43 countries out of 117 countries have levels of hunger that remain serious 

    6.) 4 countries Chad, Madagascar, Yemen, and Zambia suffer from hunger levels that are alarming and 1 country Central African Republic from a level that is extremely alarming 

    7.) GHI scores are calculated using a three-step process that draws on available data from various sources to capture the multidimensional nature of hunger. The four indicators used are – Undernourishment, Child Mortality, Child Wasting and Child Stunting. 



National :
  • Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Campaign launched on February 10, 2020 to promote cultural unity among various states of the country. It is 18-days long campaign that will continue till the 28th of February 2020. The objective of this campaign is to promote the spirit of national integration through various cultural activities. 

    As per the agenda of Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat, the concept of a nation for India is based on cultural diversity. Unity has been established by integrating these variations of cultural elements like language, religion, caste, customs, food and living in India.


  • National Conference on e-Governance 2020 concluded in Mumbai on February 8, 2020 after two days of rich deliberations on issues, opportunities and challenges in transforming governance using digital technologies. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said that e-Governance is the key to the future of India's developmental journey in the 21st century. The minister stated that whether it is e-NAM or Ayushman Bharat, e-Governance is essential to good governance. The Mumbai Declaration on e-Governance has been unanimously adopted. 

    In recognition of excellence in the implementation of e-Governance initiatives, the National e-Governance Awards 2020 were presented at the valedictory session of National Conference on e-Governance 2020. 

    1.) National Health Authority, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare received Gold for Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, under the category Excellence in Government Process Re-engineering for Digital Transformation. 

    2.) Antyodaya Saral Haryana of Department of IT, Haryana received the Gold for Excellence in providing citizen-centric delivery. 

    3.) IIT Roorkee’s Satellite-Based Agriculture Information System: An Efficient Application of ICT - received the Gold Award for Outstanding Research on Citizen-Centric Services.



Bilateral :
  • Srilankan Prime Minister Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in New Delhi on February 7, 2020 on a five-day visit to India. 

    Highlights of the Bilateral meetings:

    1.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 8, 2020 expressed hope that the Sri Lankan government will fulfill expectations of Tamil people for equality, justice, peace and respect in the island nation. 

    2.) After holding talks, Mr. Modi said stability, security and prosperity in Sri Lanka is not only in India's interest but also in the interest of the entire Indian Ocean Region. He said both countries have decided to deepen cooperation to combat terrorism. 

    3.) The two prime ministers deliberated on the entire expanse of bilateral ties and resolved to further deepen anti-terror cooperation and boost trade and investment ties.  

    4.) Prime Minister Modi said, India has been a trusted partner in Sri Lanka's development and will continue to assist the country in its journey for peace and development. He added that new lines of credit announced last year will strengthen development cooperation between the two neighbours.


  • A meeting of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal on the BBIN MVA (Motor Vehicle Act) was held in New Delhi on February 8, 2020. The Indian delegation was led by Vikram Doraiswami, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs. 

    1.) The meeting was held to discuss the passenger and cargo Protocols that are to give effect to the Motor Vehicles Agreement for the Regulation of Passenger, Personal and Cargo Vehicular Traffic between the four countries signed in 2015. 

    2.) The delegations recalled commitments made for implementation of the BBIN MVA and the importance of trade, economic cooperation and people-to-people contact. 

    3.) Delegations expressed satisfaction over progress made by each country in internal consultations with their stake-holders for the Protocol for movement of Passengers. 


  • In line with India's Neighbourhood First policy, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla met Ambassadors of Nepal, Bangladesh, China and Maldives in New Delhi on February 7, 2020. 

    Highlights of Bilateral Meetings:

    1.) During the meeting with Ambassador of Nepal to India Nilamber Acharya, they expressed satisfaction at the positive trajectory in the Indo-Nepal relations and looked forward to work together to further strengthen the close relationship. 

    2.) The Foreign Secretary in his meeting with Ambassador of Bangladesh to India Muhammad Imran recalled his days as High Commissioner in Dhaka and conveyed that India looks forward to jointly celebrate the Mujib Barsho and 50 years of Bangladesh's liberation. 

    3.) During interaction with Ambassador of China to India Sun Weidong, both discussed issues related to the bilateral relations including events related to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The Foreign Secretary conveyed appreciation to the Chinese Government for facilitating evacuation of Indians from Wuhan. 

    4.) During meeting with High Commissioner of Maldives to India Aishah Didi, Foreign Secretary congratulated her on being appointed as Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Mr Shringla thanked her for outstanding work in transforming the India-Maldives relationship under the leadership of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.



Economy :
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said Sri Lanka’s economy is gradually recovering after Easter Sunday terrorist attacks last year with GDP growth projected at 3.7 percent in 2020. An IMF staff mission to Sri Lanka estimated the real GDP growth at 2.6 percent last year but expected the GDP to bounce back this year on the back of a recovery in tourism.


  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been named the Central Banker of the Year, Asia-Pacific 2020, and Conferred by the London-based The Banker magazine, the award recognizes Shaktikanta Das’efforts to make the banking system more robust.



Business :
  • Flipkart shuts down Jabong to focus on Myntra. Flipkart acquired the fashion platform Jabong about four years ago. Now, users are being sent to Myntra while they are visiting Jabong. In 2016, Flipkart bought Jabong for USD 70 million. However, it had become difficult for Flipkart to make a long-term strategy to save its fashion portal.


  • External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has called upon Indian businesses to take initiatives vis-a-vis the Central Asian markets. He said, the time has come for India and Central Asia to create common platform to share ideas and translate the goodwill and desires into practical outcomes. Addressing India - Central Asia Business Council organized by FICCI in New Delhi, Dr Jaishankar said, Central Asia is not a distant region for India and it is a part of country's extended neighbourhood.



Defence :
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 11th edition of the DefExpo-2020, a flagship biennial event of the Ministry of Defence in Lucknow, UttarPradesh on February 5, 2020. The theme of the Expo is "India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub". The Expo promises to bring new technologies, technological solutions, where Defence manufacturing companies from India and abroad showcase their products and services in the Defence arena, on a single platform. 

    40 Defence Ministers were part of total 70 foreign delegations that visited Lucknow. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath termed the DefExpo as Defence Kumbh, which witnessed presence of more than 3,000 foreign delegates, 10,000 Indian delegates and 12 lakh visitors and laid a strong foundation for the development of UP Defence corridor. 

    Innagural Speech by Govt of India :
    1.) Prime Minister invited global defence majors to set up their manufacturing units in India. Mr Modi said, there is an infinite opportunity in defence manufacturing in India. He said, there is demand, democracy and decisiveness in India. 

    2.) Prime Minister said, India also offers talent, infrastructure, favourable policy initiative and security of investment. Mr Modi said, lack of proper policy initiatives in the last several decades has made India the biggest importer of defence platforms. 

    3.) Prime Minister said, his government has taken a series of policy initiatives to cut the country's dependence on arms imports and promote domestic production. Mr Modi said, India is significantly boosting its military might and even increasing presence in outer space responsibly. 

    4.) Defence Minister Rajanath Singh said that the creation of two defence corridors in India is a result of prime minister's vision of leading India to become a technological powerhouse. He said that the nation will benefit from the defence industrial ecosystem being setup and developed using cluster development. 

    5.) Chief Minister of UttarPradesh, Yogi Adityanath said the defence corridor being setup in Uttar Pradesh will create a world-class defence ecosystem that will cater to the technological needs of the defence companies. 

    Lucknow Declaration :
    India and African nations adopted the ‘Lucknow Declaration’ during the first India-Africa Defence Minister’s Conclave on February 6, 2020. The conclave was held on the sidelines of the 11th edition of the biennial defence exhibition, DEFEXPO India 2020.

    The ‘Lucknow Declaration’ was adopted in the presence of Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his counterparts from 12 African nations and heads of delegations from 38 other African countries. Overall, 50 African nations signed the declaration along with India at the conclave, which was organized for the very first time. 


    Bandhan ceremony :
    The ceremony tilted Bandhan aimed at forging and renewing partnerships for innovative collaboration, and transformation of the Defence manufacturing in the country. They were signed by representatives of various DPSUs, Indian private Defence companies and foreign companies in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow.

    Bandhan ceremony witnessed more than 13 product launches, 124 MoUs between DPSUs, private and global defence manufacturing companies. 23 MoUs were signed between the UP Government and private companies. 



  • In a first, advanced Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) will be manufactured in India, with leading aeronautical entity Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) set to formalise a partnership with an Israeli firm that specializes in autonomous weaponry. The advanced Heron TP, which belongs to the Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) class with endurance of over 36 hours, will be manufactured to cater both to Indian requirements for a combat UAV and possibly exports to third nations in the future as well.


Persons :
  • Renowned thinker, writer and the founder-director of Bharatiya Vichara Kendram, P Parameswaran passed away on February 9, 2020 at Ottapalam in kerala. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2018 and Padma Shri in 2004. P Parameswaran was one of the senior-most Pracharaks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, RSS and former leader of the erstwhile Bharatiya Jana Sangh.


  • Well-known Hindi novelist and Padma Shri awardee Giriraj Kishore passed away on February 9, 2020. He was best known for his novel "Pehla Girmitiya" that was based on Mahatma Gandhi''s stay in South Africa. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India and was the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award.


  • SS Vasan, a doctor of Indian origin, has been made the head of the team of researchers to develop a vaccine to fight the Coronavirus. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) issued a statement saying that the purpose of this research is to understand the Coronavirus properly. It is undergoing testing at the High-Security Lab of the Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) of Australia.


  • Kenya's former President Daniel arapMoi has died at the age of 95. Mr Moi was Kenya's longest-serving president. He was in office for 24 years, until intense pressure forced him to step down in 2002.

  • Top Indian badminton coach, Pullela Gopichand was awarded an "honourable mention" at the IOC Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards 2019 for his excellence and contribution in the field of coaching. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards is an initiative of the IOC Athletes' Entourage Commission to recognise outstanding achievements and contributions a coach has made to develop and encourage athletes in line with the Olympic values in summer or winter Olympic sports.

  • The Nagaland State Transport (NST) has been adjudged the winner of ARSTU’s Transports Minister’s Road Safety Awards 2018-19 (for lowest rate of accidents) in the category of “Hill.” The award will be presented during the 3rd International Conference and Exhibition on Public Transport Innovation, 2020 (ICEPTI-2020) at Manekshaw centre, New Delhi.



Sports :
  • India finished their campaign with five medals at the 64th Bocskai Memorial Boxing tournament at Debrecen in Hungary.
    1.) Gaurav Chauhan in 91kg category, Jyoti Gulia in 51kg category, Manisha in 57kg category and PL Prasad in 52kg category clinched silver medals.

    2.) Sachin clinched a bronze medal in the 57kg category.


  • In Weightlifting, Chandrakant Mali created three records in his men’s 109kg title victory on the concluding day of the National Championships at Kolkata on February 8, 2020.


  • National Rifle and Pistol Shooting trials event 2020 held in Thiruvananthapuram on February 7, 2020. 

    1.) Haryana's Nischal claimed the top honours in the women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions T2. 
    2.) Indian Navy shooter Anuradha won the women's 10m Air Pistol.
    3.) Indian Navy shooter Yogesh Singhmen's won the 25M Center Fire Pistol T2 event.
    4.) In the other Olympic event, Anuradha won the women's 10M Air Pistol final.
    5.) Manu Bhaker captured the Junior women's 10M Air Pistol T2 event.


  • BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said he will accept Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) offer to become the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics this year (2020).
