February 2020 Awards

  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was conferred the Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee award 2020 for Politics on 28th February. Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee award was instituted by India Foundation. The award carries a citation, a specially designed trophy and a cheque worth Rs.1 lakh.

  • President of India, Ram Nath Kovind conferred national awards to 21 winners for science communication and popularization including women excellence awards for meritorious women scientists on the occasion of National Science Day. 

    The awards included Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) Awards, National Science and Technology Communication Awards, SERB Women Excellence Awards, and National Award for Young Woman Showing Excellence through Application of Technology for Societal Benefits. 

    Three initiatives:On the occasion, President announced three key initiatives for Gender Advancement and Equality in Academic and Research Institutions. 

    1) VigyanJyoti: VigyanJyoti is an initiative that will create a level-playing field for the meritorious girls in high school to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in their higher education. 

    2) GATI: The Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions (GATI) initiative will develop a comprehensive Charter and a framework for assessing the Gender Equality in STEM. 

    3) Online portal for S&T resources for women: An online portal for science and technology resources for women will provide e-resources related to all women-specific government schemes, scholarships, fellowships, career counseling with details of subject area experts from various disciplines in science and technology.

  • The Raja Ravi Varma State Award for the year 2019 was conferred on a veteran painter from Kalaburagi Prof. J.S. Khanderao and senior artist from Mumbai, Vasudev Kamath for the year 2020 at a programme organized in the institute premises located on Narasaraja Road in Chamundipuram, Mysore, Karnataka. 

    Raja Ravi Varma State Award was instituted by Karnataka's Shri Ravi varma Art Institute. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.10,000 and a citation.

  • Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' presents Vishwakarma Awards 2019 to the winners in New Delhi. It was organized in the All India Council for Technical Training. 

    23 groups were awarded the Chatra Vishwakarma Awards (CVA)6 institutes were awarded the Utkrisht Santhan Vishwakarma Award (USVA). 

    The award recognizes college students who have good potential and are an asset to the nation. He appreciated NITI Ayog and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) to support college students by bringing their concepts into actuality.

  • Dr. Niti Kumar, Senior Scientist of Molecular Parasitology and Immunology Division, CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow, has received the SERB Women's Excellence Award-2020. She will be awarded by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind during the National Science Day celebration at Vigyan Bhawan on February 28, 2020. 

    The award is given to women scientists under the age of 40, who have received honors from various national academies. Women researchers will be assisted by Science and Engineering Research Board(SERB) of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, with a grant of Rs 5 lakh per year for 3 years.

  • ESPN Multi-Sport Awards 2019 recognized achievements across 10 categories : 

    Female Sportsperson of the Year : P V Sindhu (Badminton)
    Male Sportsperson of the Year : Saurabh Chaudhary (Shooting)
    Courage award : Dutee Chand (Sprint)
    Comeback of the the Year : Koneru Humpy (Ace Chess)

    Coach of the Year : Pullela Gopichand (Badminton Coach)
    Moment of the Year : Sindhu's World Championship win, the first by an Indian in badminton
    Team of the Year honour : Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary (Shooting)
    Para-Athlete of the Year : Manasi Girishchandra Joshi (Badminton)
    Lifetime Achievement award : Balbir Singh Senior (Hockey)

  • India’s pioneering feminist scholar and activist Gita Sen, has won the prestigious Dan David Prize for her expansive work in the fields of population policies, reproductive and sexual health, women’s rights, poverty, labour markets and global governance.

  • The Filmfare awards are held every year to honour and celebrate the finest talents of Bollywood. This year, the 65th Filmfare Awards were held at Guwahati, Assam on February 15, 2020.

  • In recognition of excellence in the implementation of e-Governance initiatives, the National e-Governance Awards 2020 were presented at the valedictory session of National Conference on e-Governance 2020. 

    1.) National Health Authority, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare received Gold for Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, under the category Excellence in Government Process Re-engineering for Digital Transformation. 

    2.) Antyodaya Saral Haryana of Department of IT, Haryana received the Gold for Excellence in providing citizen-centric delivery. 

    3.) IIT Roorkee’s Satellite-Based Agriculture Information System: An Efficient Application of ICT - received the Gold Award for Outstanding Research on Citizen-Centric Services.

  • Top Indian badminton coach, Pullela Gopichand was awarded an "honourable mention" at the IOC Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards 2019 for his excellence and contribution in the field of coaching. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards is an initiative of the IOC Athletes' Entourage Commission to recognise outstanding achievements and contributions a coach has made to develop and encourage athletes in line with the Olympic values in summer or winter Olympic sports.

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been named the Central Banker of the Year, Asia-Pacific 2020, and Conferred by the London-based The Banker magazine, the award recognizes Shaktikanta Das’efforts to make the banking system more robust.

  • Noted Hindi poet-novelist and Sahitya Akademi honouree Vinod Kumar Shukla has bagged the inaugural Mathrubhumi Book of the Year award for his translated book “Blue Is Like Blue“. The award was presented at the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters 2020.

  • The Nagaland State Transport (NST) has been adjudged the winner of ARSTU’s Transports Minister’s Road Safety Awards 2018-19 (for lowest rate of accidents) in the category of “Hill.” The award will be presented during the 3rd International Conference and Exhibition on Public Transport Innovation, 2020 (ICEPTI-2020) at Manekshaw centre, New Delhi.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented the International Gandhi Awards for Leprosy to Dr N.S. Dharmashaktu and the Leprosy Mission Trust in New Delhi on February 06, 2020.

  • The British Academy Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA) ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall, London February 03, 2020. This event honored the best national and international films of the year 2019. 
    The film ‘1917’ directed by British filmmaker Sam Mendes won the Best Film Award in the BAFTA ceremony. Actor Joaquin Phoenix was awarded the Best Actor Award for the film ‘Joker’ while actress Renee Zellweger won the Best Actress Award for the film ‘Judy’. 
    ‘1917’ is a British film, directed, produced and written by Sam Mendes. It is based on the situations of World War-I. Earlier, ‘1917’ won the 77th Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Motion Picture award.

  • Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) Awards : The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a maternity benefit programme implemented in all the districts of the country since 2017. Under this scheme, the cash incentive of five thousand rupees is being provided directly to the bank and post office account of pregnant women and lactating mothers for the first living child of the family. 

    Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani given the PMMVY awards to states, union territories and districts for best performance. 
    1.) In the category of best performance among States and Union Territories having a population of more than one crorethe first position was awarded to Madhya Pradesh followed by Andhra Pradesh and Haryana.
    2.) Among States and Union Territories having a population of less than one crore, Dadra and Nagar Haveli got the first award.
