February 2020 Days & Books

  • National Protein Day of India was observed on 27 February. The day marks the annual commemorative day to rally Indians towards the mission of protein awareness and sufficiency. 

    The theme of India Protein Day 2020 is #ProteinMeinKyaHai. The theme aims to spread more knowledge about protein. The main objective of the day is to bring about a behavioral change by persuading Indians to eat adequate protein in every meal. 

    The India Protein day was launched on 27 February 2020 under the Right to Protein, a national-level public health initiative. The day was launched to draw public attention, raise awareness, and educate India on the health benefits of protein. The day is observed in many countries globally. 

    Right to Protein initiative is India's first advocacy program that calls for the right to adequate protein as the core of nutrition for India. The initiative aims to improve the quality and consistency of different types of protein consumed in India. It also aims to lead to greater protein consumption by poultry, livestock, and pisciculture& aquaculture, including fish & shrimp farming.

  • World rare disease day is observed on 28/29 (last day of) February. The day aims to raise awareness for the millions of people who are impacted by a rare disease. It aims to educate people about rare diseases and their impacts. 

    The theme of the day is "Reframe Rare". The theme encourages everyone to take steps to clarify many of the misconceptions that can make people with rare diseases feel isolated and affect the quality of care and support they receive. The Slogan for 2020 is "Rare is Many. Rare is Strong. Rare is Proud." 

    The World rare disease day was first launched by the European Organization for Rare Disorders (EURORDIS) and its Council of National Alliances on 29 February 2008, a rare date that comes only once in four years. Since then the day is observed on the last day of February. In 2009. the US joined with EURORIDS. By 2017, over 94 countries joined the alliance.

  • National Science Day is celebrated in India on February 28, 2020. On this day, Sir CV Raman had announced the discovery of the Raman Effect for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. 

    The theme of 2020 is "Women in science". This theme has been chosen for the purpose of increasing public appreciation of the scientific issues involved.

  • World NGO Day is observed on 27 February. The day aims to raise awareness about the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) sector. The day is observed every year to encourage people worldwide who are involved and dedicatedly working for a good cause.

  • The first anniversary of the National War Memorial is observed on February 25, 2020. The monument was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019. 

    The memorial is a fitting tribute to those heroes who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during various wars and internal security challenges since Independence. 

    The memorial helps in strengthening the sense of high moral values, sacrifice and national pride in the citizens. Over the last one year, more than 21 lakh people including dignitaries, both domestic and foreign, have visited the memorial.

  • February 26, 2020 is the first anniversary of Balakot strike carried out by the Indian Air Force. On this day in the year 2019, Air strikes were conducted during the wee hours on terror launch pads located in Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Paktunkhwa province. A very large number of Jaish-e-Mohammed, JeM terrorists, trainers and Jihadis who were being trained for Fidayeen attacks were eliminated by the Indian Air Force.

  • Bangladesh on February 21, 2020 observed the Shaheed Dibash known as ‘Amar Ekushey’ across the country to pay tribute to the martyrs of language movement. The day is observed as Shaheed Dibash to commemorate the martyrs who were killed in firing by the Pakistani police on 21 February 1952 in Dhaka.

  • On 24th February every year, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) celebrates the Central Excise Day across the country. The day aims to honour the contribution of the Central Board of Excise and Custom to India's economy. 

    Additionally, the Central Excise Board being a primary tax collection agency for the Central Government, the day also recognizes and acknowledges the hard work put in by the officers of CBCE and encourages them to carry out their duty with utmost sincerity. Furthermore, the day is also observed to check corruption in goods manufacturing business as well as implement other rules to carry out the best possible excise services.

  • Nepal celebrated its 70th National Democracy Day on February 19, 2020.

  • International Mother Language Day is celebrated On 21st February, 2020 as a worldwide annual observance of UNESCO. UNESCO has identified over 7000 languages that are used (read, written and spoken) in different countries across the world and 21st February has been marked to celebrate this ‘Multilinguism’. The central theme for International Mother Language Day 2020 is ‘Languages without borders’.  

  • India observed and celebrated International Mother Language Day as Matribhasha Diwas across the country on 21st February 2020 to highlight the linguistic diversity of our country. The theme of the Matribhasha Diwas 2020 to be celebrated across India is ‘Celebrating our Multilingual Heritage’ reflecting the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat.

  • Soil Health Card Day is being observed across the India on February 19, 2020. This day is observed because Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Soil Health Card Scheme on February 19, 2015, in Suratgarh, Rajasthan. A government agency collects the soil samples from villages and distributes Soil Health Cards to all the farmers. Apart from that, farmers are also given information about using natural fertilizers.

  • World Radio Day is observed on February 13, 2020. The day is observed every year to raise greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio and to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio. The theme for the 2020 World Radio Day is "Radio and Diversity".

  • India celebrates Sarojini Naidu's birthday as National Women's Day of India every year on February 13. Sarojini Naidu was India's first women governor and also famous as 'Bharat Kokila'. 

    She was famous for her nickname 'Nightingale of India' because of her poems. Sarojini Naidu was not only a freedom fighter, but she also became the first woman governor of the United Provinces, the present Uttar Pradesh. Sarojini Naidu was born on February 13, 1879. She actively participated in the Indian National Movement for the independence of the country.

  • The National Deworming Day is observed in India on February 10, 2020. Children and adolescents in the age group of 1 to 19 years are being administered single dose of a safe medicine Albendazole in all states and Union Territories on the occasion. 

    The objective of the day is to deworm children and adolescents to reduce the prevalence of parasitic worms in the intestine. Union Health Ministry has said that washing hands can prevent worm infestation and many other diseases to a larger extent.

  • World Unani Day is observed every year on 11th February. This day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of Hakim Ajmal Khan. He was an eminent Indian Unani physician who was a versatile genius, a great scholar, a social reformer, a noted freedom fighter, a Unani medical educationist and founder of scientific research in Unani System of Medicine. He was one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. 

    The main objective of World Unani Day is to spread awareness about health care delivery through Unani system of medicine through its preventive and curative philosophy. The unani system of medicine originated in Greece. Its foundation was laid by Hippocrates. The system owes its present form to the Arabs who not only saved much of the Greek literature by rendering it into Arabic but also enriched the medicine of their day with their own contributions.

  • Ravidas Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas, is being celebrated across the India on February 9, 2020. Sant Ravidas was a 14th-century saint and founder of the Bhakti movement in North India.

  • World Cancer Day is observed on the 4th of February every year to create awareness about cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that cancer cases will rise by 81 percent in low and middle-income countries by 2040 because of a lack of investment in prevention and care. It said, these countries have focused their limited resources on combating infectious diseases and improving maternal and child health instead of fighting cancer.

  • Indian coast guard celebrated its foundation day on 1st February.

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar released the "Reference Annual, India 2020 and Bharat 2020" in New Delhi. E-version of the year books were also released on this occasion. Mr. Javadekar said that the digital version of the Reference Annual carry exhaustive and comprehensive information about the country and the activities, progress and achievements of various Central Government Ministries, Departments and Organisations during the year.
